Fall 2016 Courses
The Wired! Lab offers courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. Courses cover a range of art historical and historical topics, as well as methods and theories of digital humanities and digital art history. Each course integrates the use of one or more digital tools into its syllabus. These tools enhance students’ understandings of course materials while also adding to their digital skill sets.

ARTHIST 190S-01 Medieval Castles of Europe
This special topics course investigates the evolution of medieval castles in Europe. Students will use 3D modeling to reconstruct vanished or ruinous castles as they may have appeared in their heydays. Read more.

ARTHIST 190S-02 The Medieval Castle in Britain
This special topics course, created by popular demand, investigates the evolution of the British castle from the Norman Conquest through the end of the Tudor dynasty (i.e., 1066-1603). Students will use 3D modeling to map the location of castles in the British landscape, as well as make digital reconstructions (both external and internal) of how a vanished or ruinous castle would have appeared in its heyday. Digital Tools & Techniques: 3D modeling (SketchUp)
ARTHIST 225-01 Gothic Cathedrals
In this course, students work in teams of 3 to create a fictional cathedral. The “master builders” in this class learn a computer-design program (AutoCad) to produce their cathedral plans and drawings appropriate in style and structure to the date and place chosen by the group. Projects are presented to a jury at the end of the semester and prizes are awarded for teamwork, project quality, and originality. Read more.

ARTHIST 256 Italian Baroque Art
This course traces the development of the Italian baroque in architecture, sculpture and painting and considers a variety of themes relevant to Baroque artistic production. The semester project will include a digital treatment of art historical content. Read more.

ARTHIST 315L Historical GIS
**UPDATE 8/25/2016: This course has been postponed to Spring 2017.**
This is a beginner/intermediate Geographic Information System (GIS) course designed to help students develop GIS skills. The class emphasizes perspectives, procedures, and tools that are relevant to applications of GIS in humanistic disciplines. Although geared toward art history, students from any discipline are welcome. Read more.

HCVIS 580S-01 Historical & Cultural Visualization Proseminar 1
This graduate proseminar, along with the HCVIS Proseminar 2 taught in the Spring semester, focuses on a survey of historical and cultural visualization production techniques, along with discussion of their various affordances within a theoretical and critical context. Final projects will consist of a digitally mediated presentation of your own work, along with a written explication of your media choices and their effects. Read more.
